These Habits Will Help You Get Ahead in Your Career

Job hunting is one thing. But if you’re looking for a fulfilling career, not just your next position, you will need to develop some new habits. Here a few things you can do to ensure that you’re always taking the next step forward in your career.

Determine Your Mission and Actively Pursue It

You are an individual with your own set of talents, skills, knowledge, experiences, and values. Somewhere out there is a career path that uniquely suits you. Figure out what that is, and then keep it front and center when deciding which steps to take.

Ask for What You Want

Whether it’s a promotion, a new job, a flexible schedule, or a raise, you won’t get 99% of what you don’t ask for. Rather than sitting back and hoping your boss reads your mind and makes an offer, proactively request the things that will help your career.

Trust Your Instincts

Logic is an important part of decision-making, but don’t let your brain override your gut. If a situation doesn’t feel right, figure out a different path. If you feel called to a new job, even if it’s outside your field, send off a resume. The road less traveled isn’t a life sentence, just a new direction to try. If you find out the new situation isn’t right, you can always change course again.

Get Rid of the “Shoulds”

Most of us live our lives according to what we think we “should” be doing, but that could be why Henry David Thoreau noted that “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” Who says you should? Why should you? And who’s going to get hurt if you don’t? Stop listening to the echoes of past critics, and get on with living life, and building your career, on your terms.

Find Balance

Watch The Karate Kid if you need some inspiration for this. But in a nutshell, humans do best when we combine work, education, and fun throughout our lives. Don’t get so wrapped up in work that you let the other two go. You’ll be more relaxed, more productive, and able to make smarter career decisions once you find balance in your life.
