This Checklist Will Help Make Sure You Start Your New Job Right

You’ve probably heard that old expression, “You only get one chance to make a good first impression.” This can make the first day at a new job feel nerve-wracking. But a bit of planning can help ensure that you start on the right foot. Here are some things to do the night before you start your new job.

Plan Your Wardrobe

Your outfit says a lot about you, so choose something that makes you feel your best. You’ll want to fit in with your coworkers, so dress down a bit for a more casual office or more formally for a conservative office. Ensure your outfit is comfortable, as you don’t want to spend your first day miserable or distracted.

Give Yourself Extra Time

Plan your morning and set your alarm to give yourself at least 15 extra minutes to get to work. Decide what you’re going to have for breakfast, and make sure you’ve accounted for childcare or anything else you need to do before heading into work.

Pack a Bag

Gather and organize any documents that your employer sent, along with your identification. Add a pen and a notebook, a sweater or jacket, and some lunch money. If you’re not sure how the lunch situation works, add some nonperishable snacks.

Double Check the Details

Review your notes on exactly where to park or how to get to the worksite by public transportation. You will also want to know the names of anyone you previously met. Make sure you know where to go when you arrive.

Find Some Conversation Starters

Think of some noncontroversial small talk topics, as well as a few questions about your new job. You’ll likely be chatting with many people, so it only makes sense to have some idea of what to say. Be sure to steer clear of politics or religion, and promise yourself that you will stay out of office drama.

Relax

When everything is in place, take a deep breath. You’re well prepared, and you’re about to embark on a new adventure. Take some time to relax and recharge, and then get a good night’s sleep. You’ve got this!
