LANSING, Ill. (October 29, 2020) – “We are not day labor,” says Ivet Gutierrez, Manager of the Lansing branch of Total Staffing Solutions, which has opened in the building formerly occupied by Minuteman Press (17930 Torrence Avenue). “Every order we get, we call individuals in our database who are a match.”

Gutierrez works with a team of four people in the Lansing office who are constantly on the phone—with companies who need workers and with workers who are available. At the moment, the job openings in Total Staffing’s vast database exceed the workers, so Gutierrez is looking for more applicants.

Busy season

Many people understand that the weeks leading up to Christmas are a busy retail season, but they might not be aware that busy retail also requires an increase in manufacturing and customer service work. Those are the positions that Total Staffing Solutions specializes in.

The company does skills testing in their Lansing office as well as online. As would-be workers complete the application and the testing, their skills are added to an inventory that Gutierrez and her team search whenever they get staffing requests from their inventory of companies. Companies let Total Staffing know what kind of jobs they have available, and Total Staffing matches applicants to those jobs.

“Test drive”

Businesses use staffing agencies not only to fill openings quickly, but also because the process allows them to work with a temporary employee and evaluate performance and personality before committing to a full-time hire. Gutierrez says many of Total Staffing’s temps end up being hired by the companies they serve. It’s the most common reason they need to continually recruit new workers.

Signing up with an agency also allows workers to “test drive” a variety of jobs and employers before making a decision about what kind of work they want and what kind of company culture they prefer.

Community investment

Sandy Huerta works at the Total Staffing Solutions corporate office in Naperville. She points out that the company likes to “give back” to the communities where they have branch offices. In pre-pandemic times they have hosted job fairs but also training sessions that give job-seekers resumé writing tips and interview practice.

This year they are working with One Warm Coat to do a winter coat drive at all their locations, including Lansing. The coat drive will run from November 1–20, and the public is welcome to donate “lightly used” coats or financial gifts.
